Roy's, San Francisco or Philadelphia

We have been to the one in Philly but when heading to Napa we always stay one night in San Fransisco, this city has some amazing culinary treasures. One being Roy's.

In Hawaii, there are two things of equal importance—food and the "aloha" spirit. The blending of these two dynamic principles is how Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine was born. European techniques and Asian cuisine meet Hawaiian hospitality to create a fine dining experience unlike any other. Where the "aloha" style of service comes straight from the heart, and where any occasion becomes an unforgettable evening.

In 1988, James Beard Award-winner Roy Yamaguchi opened the first Roy's in Honolulu, Hawaii. Today there are 31 Roy's locations around the world—23 in the continental U.S., six in Hawaii, one in Japan and one in Guam. The restaurant was designed around a unique experience through spacious dining rooms, an expansive lounge and Roy’s signature exhibition kitchen in full view.

Listed below are some of the items we had, I recommend getting everything...you will not be disappointed. I also highly recommend getting his book, Roy's fish & seafood recipes from the pacific rim....page 9, butterfish...OMG good.

Julian Serrano, Las Vegas

The love for eating is something that I feel needs to be researched, explored and most of all shared with friends and or love ones, must be shared....this is the key to enjoying the dining experience.

Growing up in a Spanish home I didn't know any other way to eat, Daddy comes home, we all sit down together and my Mother would just keep on bringing waves the food and we keep eating and eating....

I go to Vegas ever year for the Food and Beverage convention and I finally discovered what's at the end of the rainbow.....Aria, this new mega resort destination has it all and it's lined up with the best of the best when it comes to eateries. Maybe because I'm Spanish and I love the tapas way of eating I was so happy to fine Julian Serrano place.

When you go bring friends with you, we ordered from the special event menu, tapas for the table @ $55 a head. This menu allows you to pick 2 items from each group. You have four different catorgories and being a table of four we basically eat the whole menu.

Check out the web site below.

Casa Mono, New York City

It's a very difficult decision to make when you have 17 different offering's from Mario Batali & Joe Bastianich....being Spanish and a true foodie I'm up for the challenge to eat my way around all of them.

Casa Mono is Mario's Spanish taverna with a New York sensibility that will make you long to stroll down Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Choose from over 500 wines and another dozen Sherries. Tapas-style small plates are all the rage, but traditional appetizers and entrees are also spun beautifully by Mario and Chef Andy Nusser. Marion Burros of The New York Times says Mario has " …another hit on his hands."

How do you not love a restaurant that has a whole Iberico ham, sliced paper-thin on antique Berkel slicers.

It took me back to days when I was young and watching my Father go into the basement and slicing the whole ham as thin as possible. He would come up with a plate full and and a big smile on his face. He would sit down and open a nice Rioja and dive in. I would sit their salivating until he finally said "want some???", it was so cool having parents that knew how to eat.....

We almost ate the whole menu, listed below are just some of our favorites and the wine list is awesome, great job Joe.
Head on Shrimp with al Ajillo,
Scallops with Concord Grapes and Brussels sprouts & Foie Gras with Cinco Cebollas.......

Built in July 1989 and completed in 1991 Baron Phillippe, his daughter Phillippine and "The Man" Robert Mondavi opened what I consider the best winery in the world, for me. On one of our trips to Napa we're able to arrange a private tour and tasting of the winery. As you drive up into the winery you find find yourself amazed at what you are looking at. So simply, so elegant, so beautiful...perfect.

Washington DC

Our Nations Capital is an amazing place and more people need to revisit it. My son was extremely excited to see all the sites and monuments. The Smithsonian is huge and so many interesting sites to discover.

The one thing as a foodie I must say is that I was shocked that our only eatery option was the corner trucks selling typical old school truck food items, ie hot dogs, pretzels, chips, bad coffee, sodas and cheap touristic t-shirts. I was jonesing for a real food truck, you know the new wave age ones that feature items like escargots, carpaccio, chatcuteries, cheeses and gourmet food on four wheels. We had to settle for all beef hot dogs swimming in a bath of hot unknown water. Talk about a missed opportunities.

Anyone want to make some really money, get a food truck and park it anywhere in DC. You have 1000's of government employees aka "customer" wandering the streets looking for something to eat.

Elvis Run, 9/11 Motorcycle Rally, NJ

This past Sunday aka, Pinky Tuscadero and I went on a motorcycle run to raise money for the 343 fallen fighters that paid the Ultimate Sacrifice.  I've been to many motorcycle run in the past and maybe because it was the ten years anniversary of 9/11 this one had an incredible turnout, had to have over 2,000 bikers show up.  It was a tremendous turn out.

This being "Pinky's" first rally she was I'd say overwhelmed as we rode.  Sitting on the back taking photos and waving to the crowds as if she was in a contestent in Miss America Parade.  The ride started in Rockaway and ended in Newark, full police escort..... Riding with a police escort is a little different then just crusine alone. We never have to stop for any lights so it pretty cool going thru the intersecations as you watch the police stop traffic in all directions.

We arrived in Newark with a sea of cycles, again over 2,000....we enjoyed the music and food and honored the memory of all the fallen fire fighters.

God Bless them all. Web site attached below if you wish to donate and see photos.

Hurricane Irene, NJ

Hola my fellow foodies, as we all prepare for hurricane Irene I view this as being a great romantic opportunity.  I was very surprised to hear our Governor shut down South Jersey, I feel it was a great choice due to the pending hurricane coming and to see NYC shut down is amazing.  I felt like I was watching Chef Gordon Ramsey say "Shut it Down...Shut the City's down, Everyone Out".  So of course I did my due diligence's of going out to the local supermarket and picking up the essentials, aka...water, batteries, matches, peanut butter, bread, ice and cold cuts and I also prepared my car with an emergency travel kit and filled the gas tank....I'm set and ready.

The foodie in me felt the supermarket and headed right out to the local cheese and chacurity store and then paid a visit to my local wine store. As much as many people see this as inconvenience and burden I see it more as a great romantic opportunity with my lady.  I'm hoping the power goes out so I can light up the house with candles, break out my batteries operated CD player and then open a bottle of 2001 Rubicon Estate Cask, break out the olive oil, Artisan cheese and plate up the chacurity....Love it, I hope the powers out for a week. An instant stay home vacation.

To all my fellow foodies, make a negitive into a possitive....light the candles, tell her you love her and enjoy.

PS. More babies are born 9 months after any blackout and or power failure, have fun.....

Maggiano's, Hackensack NJ

It's not like the old days when you would go to the mall just to shop or take in a movie.  Back then if you wanted something to eat you painfully ate from the concension stand or crab a slice of pizza.  Today you have so many options from Asian to Italian and everything in between.

Connie and I went to the mall to shop and decided to visit Maggiano's, we have been to the one in the City and enjoyed our past visits.  I must tell you that they are not the best in service but talk about a value for you dollar.  We ordered a couple of glasses of wine both cold and refreshing.  We started with a Tomato Caprese to share which could have been shared by a family of six or a small village in Cambodia.  Looked great but tomatoes had no flavor at all, again...summer time....fresh produce Chef.  Something so simple and yet so many Chefs forget to check their produce for color and texture but most important check for flavor.  We then ordered the Veal Ravioli and a Lasagna, both very good but again extremely large portions and if you can believe it, if you order a pasta dish you receive another one to take home for FREE!!!, yes free....hello food cost.

It was a beautiful and hot day so we decided to eat outside.   The server was more entertained by some other employees that came in for lunch and really did not pay us much attention and we had to ask for everything from water, olive oil, fresh pepper, grated cheese, another glass of wine and I had to even go inside to inform her that we were done and ask for the check.  But still I have to write it off as just another young inexperienced server and no manager checking up on their staff.  The service in NY was so much better and even though we left feeling unattended we had three bags of food.  Our left over Tom Caprese, left over Ravioli, left over Lasagna and yet another full order of lasagna.... as I was saying, lots of food for the buck and in today's world where every guest is rethinking their disposable income it's a great offering for a family night out and great lunch for the next two days.

This venue gets three out of four corks for food but 1/2 cork out of four for service

Eat, Drink & Put down the Cell Phone......

It's amazing to me that after 30 years of working in the food and beverage world I still have that love and drive I had so long ago. My best friend said something to me 12 years ago and it's always stuck with me, "Life is to short...don't be a d#*k!!!". As I continue to serve and help people create memorable dining experiences I just do not understand why some people continue to be negative during their night. GrilleStone Restaurant, Scotch Plains

One of the benefits of working late nights in the restaurant business is having the time the next day to check out some nice places for lunch. Living in Westfield I'm still blown away with the number of venues within a short drive. I grabbed "Connie Coreleone", jumped on the bike and headed out.

Today we located the GrilleStone Restaurant in the town of Scotch Plains, this is a Classic American Bar & Grille. As much as we travel in search of different venues it was refreshing to see a good old American Restaurant.  You walk in and feel welcomed right away, nice open seating, behind the podium is the dining room and to the left of the entrance is the lounge. The bar area is nice and large with high tops and TV's to be able to watch your favorite sporting event. We decided to sit at a high top, which are all nice and large (four people can sit and not feel crammed together.

We ordered soup of the day, white bean....very good, nice job. Connie had the Southern Dog, grilled foot long 1/2 lb all beef hot dog, yes a hot dog....I told you it was an American restaurant. It was great to see a hot dog on the menu. it was prepared with BBQ sauce, pickle, cole slaw and served with fresh chips. I ordered the Southern Burger, BBQ sauce, smoked apple wood bacon and Swiss cheese, very good old burger, can't beat it. We also ordered a Chicken flatbread, prepared with rotisserie chicken, pesto, spinach, roasted garlic and smoked cheese. the chicken was to large and to much spinach. Even with all that extra weight the crust was crispy.

Their is nothing better then a day at the beach. I spent the whole day with my son aka little Spaniard. Going to the beach for us is always an adventure. We always go well prepared with music, beach chairs, umbrella and plenty of food and beverage treats. Acquaviva delle fonti, Westfield NJ

To look at this restaurant from the outside you feel as if you must enter, open court yard seating with music playing. That was the best thing of the night....everything went downhill as soon as we sat down.

It was Tuesday night and the special beverage was their Sangria for $11.00 a pitcher.  Being Spanish I know a bit about what it takes to make a true Sangria and I'm embarrassed that they served this to anyone stating it as Sangria. It's like serving a Gyro and calling it a Filet Mignon..... When the waiter came over he immediately wanted to take our order, we asked...any specials this evening??? He did his best to describe a snapper special and then walked away.  The menu featured a Hand made Ravioli, Chef's selection....we finally got the bus boys attention and when we asked him he went to get another server that informed us it was a ricotto and herb.

I was happy to see they had Seared Foie Gras on the menu and was looking forward to ordering it.  They served it with bitter orange marmalade, aged balsamic and crispy bread, not bad.  We did enjoy it.  Our next item was the Tuna Tartare with chili aioli, fingering potato chips and lemon.  The tuna may have stood a chance if not for the overpowering Chili Aioli.  It had a very hot after taste that destroyed the freshness of the tuna and the fingerlings were very stale.  The Classic Caesar salad with Romaine lettuce, Parmesan cheese, anchovies and croutons was very disappointing.  The lettuce was brown and wilted, a disgrace to call it a "Classic Caesar".  The Halibut was served with risotto and topped with frissee salad, fish was cooked well but again the frisee salad was brown and wilted....come on Chef, check your produce.

We just decided to get the check and leave.  It's a true shame because all they need to do is enhance the lighting in the courtyard, check their produce and hire a staff that understands the simple basics of serving their guests and providing an amazing experience.  Frankly, they could have cared less if we were there or not....

On a scale from 1 to 4 corks this venue gets a 1/2 cork.

Porto Bello, Greenport Long Island NY

Not many foodies have the opportunity to revisit their first restaurant job...30 years later. I took a ride back home with my winebeau, aka Connie Corleone to relive my past. I called my sister and her husband, Henry and Karen Hill and we headed east. My brother in-law drove and during the ride Henry and Karen had their usual bickering back and forth until Henry gently backhanded Karen and the conversation was over.

In the past, the route to the end of the Island was covered in beautiful farms with fresh grown fruits and vegetables.  During the past 30 years many families sold their land out to the up and growing wineries.  We decided to take advantage of the ride and visit some of the wineries.  At our second stop, while waiting to purchase Pellegrini Vineyards Estate Grown Merlot, a tall dark figure walked in.  Connie walked up to me and said "That's Rudy Giuliani" and I, of course, dismissed it.  Henry agreed and dismissed it also. At this time Henry's cell phone started ringing as Karen was calling from outside making the same claim as Connie.  Fellas, as much as we hate to admit it, they are always right.  I had to go up to him and discover the truth.  As I reached out my hand to him and said "our ladies are...." he stopped me and replied "yes, it's me".  I shook his hand and moved on.

As we arrived to the quaint little town of Greenport my mind started to explode with wonderful memories of the past. We walked into the restaurant and I have to tell you that besides some minor modifications and 30 coats of paint it was exactly the same as I left it......

We went to the bar so I could soak it all in (and have a cocktail of course).  Connie, Karen and Henry all sat quietly while I babbled stories of the past.  We sat down for dinner and I ordered some appetizers,  Fresh Steamed Mussels, Clams Oreganato and home made fresh mozzarella & tomatoes, served with roasted peppers, fresh basil & extra virgin olive oil.  Mussels had great flavor as Henry and I dove in, however the Clams were only okay lacking texture and the home made fresh mozzarella was bland and the tomatoes had no taste at all which is always disappointing during the summer season.  How do you not have a nice, ripe flavorful fresh locally grown tomato??

For dinner I ordered Veal Milanese, tender medallion of veal topped with baby greens, fresh mozzarella, capers & chopped tomatoes drizzled with lemon vinaigrette and olive oil.  Mine was just not good, the breading completly seperated from the veal.  Being a Monday it was clearly prepared on Friday hoping to sell out for the weekend.  Karen ordered Shrimp Scampi, fresh jumbo shrimp sauteed with garlic, white wine & herb butter served over rice or linguine.  Karen had it over pasta, had tons of flavor but the pasta was clearly overcooked.  Connie and Henry ordered from a special daily menu, Seared Scallops with a pineapple risotto, scallops were cooked perfectly and both Connie and Henry loved the risotto. Well done.....

Going out is all about creating memories and enjoying each others company, even though I may not have enjoyed our dining experience completely I was extremly happy to relive my past with family and friends.

Liberty House Restaurant and Catering, Jersey City

After deciding to exit Maritime Parc we walked over to the Liberty House Restaurant.  This is only one of six from the Landmark Hospitality arsenal. We visited Stone House at Stirling Ridge last week for Brunch, remember? The Liberty House grabs you as soon as you walk in, so much that
you just might walk into the large glass doors....you've been warned. I forgot to mention that I woke up that morning with laryngitis and I sounded like Uncle Paulie from Goodfellas. We decided to go to the bar to review the menu and check the place out. This is another beautiful restaurant with an open view of the Hudson. The cocktail list offered so many refreshing choices, I recommend tasting the Liberty Flower or one of the three different kinds of Mojito. Since we enjoyed the mussels so much at the Stone House we decided to try the mussels here. They are served with fennel, shallots, baby arugula , Peppadew Peppers and a white wine broth.....Outstanding....a must have. The mussels were so sweet and tender and full of flavor, ask for extra bread for sucking up the goodness. We are making plans to revisit again for dinner, can't wait. I've attached their web site below....if you love to eat and drink you must check this place out.

Maritime Parc, Jersey City

It was a beautiful day out so we decided to take the Motorcycle for a day trip and head out to Liberty State Park.  There are two amazingly beautiful restaurants located within the park, one being Maritime Parc which we chose for a beverage and to check it out. When we walked in it was like we were transported into some ultra chic waiting room.  We were greeted by not one, not two but three ladies at the door... I agree in having beautiful podium garnish but too much can make people feel uncomfortable when walking into an empty restaurant. One of the young ladies offered to provide us with a tour which we accepted. The restaurant offers outside seating which has a stunning view of the Hudson and the inside is a well laid out restaurant with white chairs, beautiful wood tables and an open kitchen. We decided to go to the bar for a cocktail and review the menu. They gave us five.....in a place so "chic" it only needs two menus at the most.  As we reviewed the menus we waited for someone to offer us a beverage.  After a solid ten minutes, still no bartender.  We as foodies in the biz decided to sit and see just how long it would be before one of the "parsley sprigs" at the door would break out from her mode and go "OMG, still no bartender".  At around the twelve minute mark she came back to mother earth, got behind the bar, clearly not knowing what to say and offered us some water.  Finally one of the food servers asked us if we would like something to drink. We both ordered a glass of wine, a glass of white was $12 and my red was $14.  The bartender finally showed up just in time to present us with the check.  My winebeau and I decided to write this one off for now and revisit this beautiful restaurant another day. Even though I feel it has too many menus they all looked well written and have both creativity and passion. I look forward to our next visit.

Stone House at Stirling Ridge, Warren NJ

Hello my fellow foodies.  Happy 4th of July to all.  Hope you're enjoying this rainy day holiday as much as I. I actually had a beautiful day planned with my winebeau to take a nice bike ride to Liberty State Park and maybe hit the State Fair at the Meadowlands but alas we awoke to rain.  So we revised our plan, checked the R&D journal and found a spot for brunch.

Amazing to me when checking the Stone House website how our original destination at Liberty State Park also homes the restaurant Liberty House which is owned by the same proprietors of the Stone House located just 15 minutes from my new pad.  The Stone House is just what it says, an "old stone house" that you might find on a farm yet updated and classic.  When you enter the front doors there is a great wine room to your left, completely visible, small but tall and gorgeous.

We decided to start off our adventure at the bar for a cocktail.  The Bartender of course offered Bloody Mary's which I agreed to sign up for.  "Spicy?" he says.  I say "of course".  My companion looking at me going "who are you?"  (I never drink vodka but do like cocktail sauce which is how this one came out).  Winebeau had a champagne sangria that the Bartender recommended and so good had another.  When we asked to be seated the Hostess inquired whether we wished to sit close to the Jazz trio that was playing or a little further away.  We chose further away which was wise because they really rocked it out.  Nice touch for a Sunday breakfast.

We were presented with a bread display that consisted of all miniature breakfast breads such as scones, muffins, nut bread and corn bread with a delicious homemade berry preserve.  We started off with the Prince Island Mussels Fra Diavlo.  There were sweet and spicy but not too much.  The tomato broth was perfect for dipping with the ciabatta garlic bread provided.  We asked not to have our next course rushed and we were assured that they don't do that here.  We couldn't even eat all the mussels (must have been close to 3 dozen) and moved on.  I had the Eggs Benedict.  They have five varieties to choose from but I stuck with the classic style.  Every restaurant who does Sunday brunch serves Eggs Benedict but to do them well is an accomplishment, to do them perfectly is an achievement.  We also ordered the crabcake sandwich.  It was petite but flavorful and loaded with crab.  Alongside were frites and a micro green salad.  The wine list was plentiful offering 1/2 bottles as options very rarely seen and perfect for brunch.  Upon leaving we walked the complex and discovered a wedding taking place in a reception area located behind the bar/lounge.  I would imagine there was a banquet room beyond that.

The restaurant has a porch with dining available as well as a huge patio area that unfortunately was closed today.  We also saw two private dining rooms for small parties.  When we drove out we went around the back and discovered the Chef's garden.  Even more impressed was I.

On a scale of 1 through 4 I give this one 4 corks.  We can't wait to go back for dinner and sit outside.  Ask for Heather when you go, she was a great server.  Website attached below.  Talk with you soon.

Chez Catherine, Westfield, NJ

Heys guys.  It's me, the Spainaird and I'm back.  Completed my training, graduated and am now the "king of smudges".  But enough about me let's get dishing.  Last night my winebeau and I went to a lovely french restaurant Chez Catherine.  This establishment has been around for over three decades and has listed in NJ Monthly magazine as one of the top 25 restaurants in New Jersey.  How excited was I to discover it was practically around the corner from my new digs.  Upon entering the quaint 40 seat space we were immediately greeted and rushed over to a corner table, our reservation name never even questioned.  A few moments later we were welcomed by proprietairer Didier Jouvenet.  His lifetime of experience was clearly demonstrated the entire evening by his hospitality, warmth and class.  And of course the accent...wewe..  We were presented an amuse bouche of a light salmon mousse atop a cracker of puff pastry.  Perfect bite to start the night.  Although the wine list is excellent we opted to  bring our own bottle of Opus One 2005 and pay the $35.00 corkage fee.  We were in no way snobbed against by our very french waiter by presenting a California wine, in fact he was impressed and we even got Didier to join us in a glass (hidden from the wife, of course).  The menu is a prix-fixe for $59.00 a head which includes app, entree and dessert, some offerings required a supplemental up charge.  We started with traditional escargot and terrine of foie gras.  The snails were tender but could have used a touch more garlic and the foie needed just a little more humph but melted like butter.  We added an additional course of truffle infused risotto - Killer!!  Wished I could have that for all three of my courses.  For our entrees we had the halibut, Dover sole was already sold out and the Entrecote de Boeuf, NY strip.  Halibut was cooked perfectly and the sauce light and flavorful.  The strip was a tad tough but good enough, the dauphinois potatoes more than made up for it.  For dessert we chose the creme brulee and a rhubarb and strawberry tart.  Both were delicious and just the right size.  The dessert menu reflected that they must have an excellent pastry chef on premise.

Overall a great evening.  I would highly recommend visiting.  Call for reservations, limited seating. Web site attached, chezcatherin.com and tell Didier I said hi.  Bon Appetit!

Quote for today, Ernest Hemingway

Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.

Quote for today, William Shakespeare

“O thou invisible spirit of wine, if thou has no name to be known by, let us call thee devil....O God, that men should put an enemy in their mouths to steal away their brains! that we should, with joy, pleasance revel and applause, transform ourselves into beasts!”
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) 'Othello'

Todd English PUB, Las Vegas

Located in Crystals at City Center you will find Todd English's latest restaurant concept. He debuted a modern interpretation of traditional English pub fare. Todd English is recognized as one of the most decorated and respected leaders in the culinary world. He has received numerous accolades, just to name a few.....James Beard winner, Best Chef in the Northeast, Restaurateur of the year and named by the James Beard Foundation's as the "Who's who in the Food and Beverage in America". Let's be very clear, when given a chance to visit one of Todd English's restaurants, You need to Go!!!

We went to check it out and grab a quick lunch but as soon as we entered you were very impressed by the layout. It was very welcoming and inviting. We decided to stay at the bar so we could walk around and view all the decor throughout the restaurant. I especially loved the 4x6 sign mounted to the wall showing you where the restrooms are located in a dozen different languages. So weather you were looking for the pissoir, loo, crapper or just the toilet it was clearly marked for everyone to see.

The food was very good, from the Raw Bar to the Carvery.....spot on my man!!!!! As much as the food was great it's definitely a beer drinkers heaven, offering 39 different kinds of beer. You also can get a pint, yard or a pitcher. It's so cool to visit a bar and the staff makes you feel as if your in their own home. Great job with the training. When you go ask for the 7 second Challenge.....Good Luck!! This venue is best with a group of people, we went in for a quick bite and left 6 hours later with half a dozen new friends and that what it's all about.....

Thank you so very much for a great day and our new friends, The Spaniard

Tribeca Grill, New York

Whenever given the chance to drive into the city I jump all over it. It's always so exciting and yet so difficult deciding where to go because of all the different concepts. Renowned Restauranteur Drew Nieporent and Legendary actor Robert DeNiro opened Tribeca Grill back in 1990 and it is considered to have been instrumental in helping put the Tribeca neighborhood on the map. After 21 years it is still the cool place to be......

Once I was handed the wine list I knew this was going to be a very special day. The Tribeca Grill is a wine destination, it offers Chateauneuf-du-Pape (over 300 different varietals) and the remainder of the wine list is a sommelier's dream. We found a nice bottle, and started with a cheese course. Definitely check this out. The offerings were plentiful and the price point impressive. All complemented the wine perfectly.

After the Cheese we ordered the Red Wine Braised Octopus Carpaccio, (Hearts of palm & Radish salad with a Jalapeno Vinaigrette). For our main course we ordered the Herb Pappardelle, (Braised lamb Shank, Paprika Onions, Dates & Almonds) and the Seared Sea Scallops, (Caramelized Cauliflower, Chanterelles, Haricots Verts, & golden Raisins).....OMG Good!!!!.

I want to commend the Tribeca Grill for after 21 years for still offering a great amenity and not taking their eye off the prize. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone......

PS, Check out the artwork in the gallery from DeNiro's late father.

Thank you  Drew & Robert for a great day, The Spaniard

Tuckahoe Inn, Beesley's Point

I've been to the Tuckahoe Inn many times over the past years but the last time we went we really had a bad dining experience. I wrote it off as just a bad night. We went again last week and I must say that I was very dissatisfied. They really need to change their menu and get out of the 80's.

As we sat down the table was rocking and I had to use some sugar packets to stabilize the table. The bus boy brought over the bread basket and it just confirmed my feeling's that we had traveled back in time as if I was in a twilight zone episode, the cold loaf of bread in the wicker basket served with rock hard butter pc's. We ordered a couple of glasses of house Pinot Noir from the waitress and it was a horrible glass of wine and the glass was soapy. I'm sure the bottle didn't cost them more then three dollars. For our first course we ordered the Steamed Clams and a cup of New Jersey Clam Chowder. Both were very good but I was upset to see our salad on the tray stand waiting for us to finish our first course. For our entrees we had Chef Tyson's Crab Cakes and the Veal Piccata, the crab cakes were OK, (clearly the presentation hasn't changed since the opening). You can always tell when the veal is good when you can cut it with your fork, I needed a steak knife to cut my veal and it was very tough and chewy and the piccata sauce was also a gelantinous mess on the plate.

I was looking forward to having a nice cup of coffee with his famous New Orleans Bread pudding. I was very upset to be served a cold block of bread pudding....how does something go from being so good at one time to being so sadly presented.

The Tuckahoe Inn was a great restaurant at one point but clearly the years have caught up to them. Every restaurant needs to change with the times and continue to offer different concepts and amenities.

Daniel Boulud, Las Vegas

As I was going over my notes and reviewing my photos I was saddened to see that Daniel's in Wynns, closed in August.

Since the restaurant is closed I'm not going to go into any detail about our amazing meal but I did want to say that all six of us had a tremendous dinner. I love going down the circular escalator into the atrium. We had a cocktail at the bar while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive.

As foodies we ordered many different items to review and share and we truly loved every one of them. We had an fabulous wine, 2006 Goldeneye Pinot Noir. I look forward to visiting one of his other venues in New York City. I'll have to forgo the mortgage payment that month but I'm sure it will be truly worth it and it is must closer to home.

Daniel, thank you for a great dinner.

Canaletto, Las Vegas

This is going to be the first of many amazing posting's about our adventures in Las Vegas. I've been going to Vegas for the past six years and I've been so fortunate to have dined and explored the worlds best Chef's. From Wolfgang Puck, Emeril Laggasse, Bobby Flay, Tom Colicchio, Michael Mina, Todd English and the king Joel Robuchon.....

We arrived in Vegas around 10am and after unpacking and due to the time change we all found ourselves very hungry and thirsty. Being surrounded by so many choice restaurants one doesn't just grab a cab and visit the In & Out Burger for a quick lunch, we're not animals. Located in the Piazza within the Venetian you will find many different great venues. This time we chose Canaletto. Whenever in Vegas you must go to the Venetian and make it a point of dining in the Piazza, every table makes you feel like your outside on a clear and beautiful day overlooking the Grand Canal as the gondolas are passing you by.

As I sat down with my two dining companions, "Dirk Diggler" and "Connie Corleone" we ordered a bottle of wine.  As for our food selections we started off with a margherita pizza and destroyed the first bottle. We called "garconie" over for another bottle, hoping to finally crack a smile and Dirk's face,  and picked three more dishes for us all to share. I highly recommend the following items, the Venezia Antica, (risotto with asparagus, saffron, and chicken breast), Cozze alla Marinara, (mediterrancan mussels with garlic, peperoncino baked in a spicy marinara sauce) and then the Tagliatelle Alla Castellana, (pasta ribbons tossed with pork tenderloin, bacon, shiitake mushrooms with smoked mozzarella and a bechamel and tomato sauce) OMG!!!! Good....

We always set up an agenda and make reservations for dinners because it's not an easy task at times with some of the places we like to visit but for lunches we don't make plans, main reason... "Kar nee vall!!"  Carnival Bar located at Harrahs, but that's another story and can't be shared (remember what they say about Vegas).  Canaletto was great from the moment we sat down....

Thank you, The Spaniard

Garces Trading Company, Philadelphia

Being Spanish I really enjoy tapas dining, it's just so inviting. Hands down my favorite eatery in Philly is Amada. Having eight different concepts throughout the city ranging from authentic Spanish tapas, modern Mexican, Asian and even Catalan cuisine. In the Culianry world you either lead, follow or get overtaken. Jose Garces has an amazing arsenal, the man is not just an Iron Chef but a God....

Their is so much about this place I like. The cheeses, charcuterie, bakery, desserts, olive oils and most of all the in-house state run wine room. This is a great amenity the restaurant has, pick from over 200 different kinds of wine and have it uncorked and enjoy while you dive into a great menu.

My winebeau and I stopped in for lunch and the menu explodes with vibrant beautiful dishes. From the cheeses to the pizza it just reads with fresh ingredients. To start we had the Chef's selection of cheeses and charcuterie, outstanding and it's amazing how separately so many items just don't taste well but when you simply combine them together it's like a party in your mouth. Our next course was a pizza and they are all amazing, from the Margarita to the Pancetta or my favorite the Paleta Iberico, cured pork shoulder and figs.....thin crust and just a pleasure to eat. Our next course was the Lyonnaise Duck salad, duck confit with a perfectly prepared poached egg with bacon lardons and a mustard vinaigrette. I haven't had something this devine in my mouth since my prom night.....

I love all of his restaurants and concepts not because I'm Spanish but because it's a place that any foodie can go and have a fun day enjoying all the different dishes. I'm a true Garces fan and look forward to his next adventure.

Muchas Gracias for a great day......

Amis Trattoria in Philadelphia

I must start by expressing how much I admire and respect the Vetri family. We've been to Osteria many times and I've recommend it to everyone I know.

As a foodie I love the small plate concept so when given the chance to visit Marc Vetri's latest addition Amis I jumped at it. Like a child counting down the days till Christmas I was counting down the days till our visit.

The restaurant is beautiful and has a very hip atmosphere. The open kitchen center stage is the main focus and I think it adds so much to the feel of the restaurant.

As we sat down the waiter seemed to be a little flustered and distracted but as soon as I ordered the $100. dollar bottle of wine from their reserve list we got his full attention....

All the dishes are served with the intention of sharing, family style. We started with the Salumi Misto and Sal's old school meatballs. The salumi was outstanding but Sal's old school meatball's with tomato and potato was out of this world good.....before this trip I paid homage to Lidia Bastianich (owner of Becco in NY and culinary super star) for having the best meatballs but I have to pass the baton to Amis. As I've said before, the best meatball's I have ever had.  Our next course we had the Strozzapreti alla Tuna, I can not even find words to express how good this dish was. My winebaeu and I were fighting over the last bite of pasta. It was so good that when I woke up in the middle of the night the first thing that popped into my mind was the pasta.

I've been blessed over the years to visit some of the best restaurants in America and as I sit in Amis thoughts of this joining the top five is really getting me excited. We ordered the Pork Chop, the Guinea Hen Leg Saltimbocca and a side of Polenta. Entree arrived and to use terminology from a truly great foodie Anthony Bourdain it was like we where spiraling downward out of control without a parachute.....I do not know what happen. Maybe I was just to high from the previous courses but both dishes feft me feeling disappointed.

I look forward to returning to Amis but I'll stick to the appetizers, pasta's & reserve wine list.

White Dog Cafe, University City Philadelphia

I love going into the city, Philly is full of culinary delight and I just located another one.....

We went there for lunch and right away I know it was going to be great. I have a simple practice when it comes to eating and preparing food, keep it fresh, local, have fun & explore.

The White Dog Cafe is three adjacent Victorian brownstones that is located on Sansom Street. From the moment you walk in you feel as if you just entered a cool & hip spot in town. Nice size bar with an open kitchen, a little to open I think.

We started with the Wild Mushroom soup, I'm not a true lover of the "Fungus" but I have grown to appreciate it's many different applications. Many times I will refer to something as "The best thing I have ever had" and it's true when I say it or until I find something even better. I must say that the mushroom soup at the White Dog cafe was the best I have ever had. It was truly a treat. After regaining my composure from the soup we had the Meadow Run Country Smoked Ham Sandwich & the Heirloom Apple Salad, Both had a beautiful presentation and tasted outstanding. The double smoked cheddar with the jalapeno pepper relish with the ham was a perfect combination. The salad was a meal in it's self, beautiful golden raisins, candied walnuts and local blue cheese. At this point I was considering cancelling our reservations at Amis (A Vetri restaurant), and returning for dinner. You also need to check out their gourmet hot dog menu....

The White Dog Cafe is been around for 28 years and I'm sure it will be around for many more due to it's Practice of "from the farm to our kitchen to your table".

Thank you Judy Wick and your staff for a great day out.....

Shea's Cafe in Galloway

On any given Sunday, before Church or after Church Shea's is the place to go. You will wait so dress warm but it's worth waiting for. Lou and his wife with their staff makes you feel warm and right at home with family.

Sit down coffee up and get ready to eat a big breakfast. I recommend everything on the menu but the pancakes are outstanding and if you finish them you better take a nap and skip lunch.....

The Frog and the Peach Restaurant New Brunswick NJ

You have to visit this place. it's outstanding. As a foodie one of the best things in our industry to do is R&D. This restaurant is voted one of the top 25 in NJ and I couldn't agree more.

I recommend visiting the bar for a specialty cocktail to start the evening. We sat in the garden room and the decor and feel of the room was perfect. I tend to treat myself to a very good bottle of wine when I know I'm in for a special night. The bread and butter set up was great, the butter had dill in it and it was soft....so many restaurant serve you butter and it's hard and doesn't spread. Our butter was perfect. I tend to not foucus on the bread and butter to ensure I save room for the culinary feast I'm about to enjoy.

For our first course we ordered the Pan Fried Quail & the Saffron Risotto, what a way to start the night. Both items feft me wanting more and the French wine I selected was a perfect fit. As a second course we shared the Frisee salad, the wild boar sopressata was a home run in the salad. For dinner we had the grilled Mahi Mahi with sweet potato and chorizo fondue.....need I say more. Our other entree was a grilled Pork Loin Chop with fennel and country ham w/ a mustard Jus......the fennel added so much to the dish, it was not  overwhelming. For dessert we shared the Banana Praline Semifreddo.

As a foodie I tend to over think the dishes sometimes, simply said this was a great memorable dining experience and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.....
